Estimating Juventus’s summer spending without player sales

The summer transfer window is approaching, and rumors about departures and arrivals are already swirling in the media. Let’s delve into Federico Giuntoli’s transfer budget and the obstacles he faces in the coming months.

Budget and Direction

Juventus has approximately €40 million to spend when the transfer market opens on July 1st. This money comes from the capital injection made by Exor earlier this year.

Giuntoli’s key priorities this summer are:

  • Direction: This can be split into two parts: the coaching decision and player evaluation.
  • Sustainability: Improving the club’s finances is crucial.
  • Transfer Profit: Generating profit through player sales is essential.
  • Resources: Building a squad large enough to handle a demanding season.
  • Competitiveness: Enhancing the quality of the squad is vital.

Direction

Giuntoli seems to have been entrusted with the sporting department, including the coaching role. With Allegri’s departure, rumors suggest Thiago Motta is the frontrunner to replace him.

While Allegri’s salary is already budgeted for, Motta’s wages will need to be considered within the transfer budget.

After resolving the coaching situation, Giuntoli must evaluate each player’s suitability for the new coach’s playing style.

Sustainability

Financial sustainability is a major concern. Juventus has a Settlement Agreement with UEFA and needs to improve its finances significantly. Giuntoli has already taken steps to reduce the wage bill, most notably by offloading Leonardo Bonucci’s high salary. He’s expected to continue this trend.

Transfer Profit

While Juventus has €40 million to spend, it doesn’t mean they can simply buy more than they sell. However, this budget allows Giuntoli to be active in the market without relying solely on player sales.

Juventus has a history of selling key players (Baggio, Zidane, Pogba). While losing some fan favorites is possible, Giuntoli can reinvest the profits to strengthen the squad. The academy graduates, like Huijsen and Soulé, could potentially generate significant transfer revenue.

Resources

Juventus faces a demanding schedule, with potentially 51 to 69 matches across five tournaments. Giuntoli needs to assemble a squad large enough to handle this workload and mitigate injury risks and fatigue. He may consider keeping some low-cost players as backups.

Competitiveness

While a new coach could optimize the existing squad, reinforcements are needed. Almost every position, except perhaps goalkeeper, requires quality upgrades.

Juventus has been linked to players like Riccardo Calafiori, Khephren Thuram, and Teun Koopmeiners. Improving the overall squad depth is crucial to compete domestically and in Europe.

Looking Ahead

Giuntoli faces a challenging task: making a profit, improving squad quality, lowering the wage bill, and expanding the squad size. While it’s a complex job, hopefully, Giuntoli can deliver success and usher in a new era of winning for Juventus.
