In an exclusive interview with Corriere della Sera, Michel Platini opened up about his experiences with Juventus and beyond.
The football legend shared his thoughts on various topics, providing insights into his relationship with notable figures, his views on the game, and the defining moments that shaped his career.
Reflecting on his relationship with the late Gianni Agnelli, Platini spoke of the respect he had for the Juventus president. He shared, “He wasn’t a friend, but someone whose unquestionable authority I respected. He chose me, and I believe he took pride in my contributions both on and off the field.”
Addressing the passing of Paolo Rossi, Platini expressed his shock and fond memories of the late footballer. “Paolo was not only a talented player but also a wonderful person. We had special years together, and his sudden departure was a profound shock. We shared so much laughter and success,” he remarked.

Recalling the tragic events of the Heysel Stadium disaster, Platini described it as an indelible memory. “It was a terrible memory, a painful day that I seldom discuss. I visited the injured in Brussels with Gaetano Scirea, and it left a lasting impact. Death is part of life, and we must rise again,” he said, highlighting his mother’s belief in the inevitability of fate.
Looking back at the 1983 Champions League final, Platini acknowledged the game’s significance and the unpredictability of football. “Losing that match was a reminder of football’s beauty. In that era, anyone could win or lose. Today, a few wealthy teams dominate due to financial strength,” he stated.
Offering advice to his younger self, Platini emphasized the importance of enjoying the game. “I would tell young Michel to have fun and enjoy football. Talent will shine through if you’re passionate,” he stated, lamenting the shift towards early professionalism in today’s game.
When asked about potential roles in football, Platini stated that he has already experienced various aspects of the sport. He shared, “I’ve been a player, coach, and executive. Any new role would have to be revolutionary and intriguing. At 68, I’m enjoying life.”
Addressing the possibility of becoming the President of Juventus, Platini admitted, “No one has ever asked me…” His career has spanned many years, filled with pressure and exposure, and he remains content with his current state of life.
Recalling a pivotal moment during the Tokyo Cup, Platini discussed an annulled goal that left him in disbelief. “I scored a beautiful goal, and the referee disallowed it due to an offside call. It was a moment of pure frustration. I lay on the ground, looking at the referee – a non-violent protest of my disappointment,” he recounted.
In this candid interview, Michel Platini shared his thoughts on the past, present, and future of football. From his deep respect for influential figures to his reflections on tragic events, Platini’s words offer a glimpse into the mind of a football legend who has left an indelible mark on the sport.
