In an interview with DAZN, Giorgio Chiellini talked about the racism theme, starting with what happened to Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly during the Fiorentina match against Napoli.

He also talked about the gesture of kneeling on the pitch, and also an episode that had the then Juventus player Blaise Matuidi as a protagonist.

ON KALIDOU KOULIBALY

“Shortly after my interview in the national team I heard about the Kalidou Koulibaly incident, so I said what I thought. That I was ashamed as an Italian, and in particular as a Tuscan, because it happened in Florence and Florence is my second home. It is unacceptable behaviour.”

ON BLAISE MATUIDI

“I agree that you have to be heard, be involved, and I have always also agreed to make a small gesture, such as kneeling together with our opponents. Because I lived their feelings as a team with Matuidi, when once in Cagliari he was insulted, it took a very calm boy, and made him gone mad. I could not stop him on the pitch, he could not go on.”

THE APPEAL

“We need laws and rules that must be applied and respected. Play a part, but it’s small, without change in the institutions, not just football, it will always be useless.”
