Juventus have lost 0-3 (1-4 on aggregate) against Villarreal at the Allianz Stadium and are done in the Champions League. The Bianconeri fail to make it past the round of 16, while they were in full control for most of the match. After Ajax, Lyon and Porto, Villarreal is the newest name on a growing list of teams who’ve knocked out Juve in recent years.

Juventus would get more than enough chances to take the lead in the first half. Morata put his head to a cross from Cuadrado, but the Spaniard’s header was saved by Villarreal goalkeeper Rulli. It wouldn’t be the last save from the Argentine on Wednesday night.

Ten minutes later, Dusan Vlahovic tried from far out, which forced Rulli into another stop. The Serbian striker hit the bar shortly after, when De Sciglio found him at the near post. Villarreal also got some opportunities, but they were far worse than those of the Bianconeri. Lo Celso had some space on the edge of the box, but curled it wide. Vlahovic would come close one more time before halftime. The ball fell to him after a corner, but Rulli came off his line quickly and blocked Vlahovic’ header.

Bianconeri breakdown

Juventus failed to break down Villarreal in the second half, but still had most of the possesion and shots, although that didn’t lead to any chances as big as in the first half. Everything changed when Daniele Rugani fouled Francis Coquelin in the box in the 77th minute. The referee got called to the monitor by VAR and decided to give a penalty, which was converted by Gerard Moreno, who’d just come on.

Pau Torres doubled Villarreal’s lead minutes later. Aurier headed a corner towards Szczesny’s goal from a corner, and the Spanish defender was there to put it in. The embarrassment was complete when Villarreal were awarded another penalty, after De Ligt blocked Danjuma’s shot with his arm. De Ligt’s fellow Dutchman stayed calm and sent Szczesny to the wrong corner.
