Patrick Wimmer: A potential target for Juventus attacking rejuvenation

With the future of Federico Chiesa uncertain and Matias Soulé attracting interest from foreign clubs, Juventus sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli is actively seeking reinforcements for the Bianconeri’s attack.

The wide attacking department is likely to undergo significant changes, and while the extent of this transformation remains to be seen, at least one new signing is expected. Patrick Wimmer of Wolfsburg has emerged as the latest target for the club’s management.

Who is Patrick Wimmer?

Born in 2001, Wimmer recently turned 23 and is set to feature in Austria’s upcoming match against France. Despite missing a significant portion of last season due to injury, he has earned a call-up from national team coach Ralf Rangnick.

Wimmer began his footballing career in the youth ranks of Austria Vienna before moving to Germany, where he played for Arminia Bielefeld and subsequently joined Wolfsburg in the summer of 2022.

Career in the Bundesliga and Key Statistics

Wimmer quickly established himself as a key player for Wolfsburg during his debut Bundesliga season, making 31 appearances with 3 goals and 8 assists.

These numbers are particularly impressive considering his age and the fact that it was his first season outside of Austria. However, the team’s relegation to the second division cast a shadow over an otherwise promising season.

Given his promising potential, Wimmer made the step up to Wolfsburg, where he made significant contributions in his first season, particularly considering his limited playing time. He registered 8 assists and 4 goals in just over 1600 league minutes.

Unfortunately, a severe ankle ligament injury in November sidelined him for several months, limiting his impact in the following season. He regained some rhythm in the latter stages of the campaign, earning a call-up to the Austrian national team.

Playing Style and Role

Wimmer is predominantly a right-winger but has also shown versatility, having played on the left flank and even in attacking midfield and center-forward positions. He ideally fits into Thiago Motta’s 4-2-3-1 system as a right-winger.

Why Wimmer Could be a Good Fit for Juventus

As reported by Tuttosport, Wimmer has been on Motta’s radar for quite some time.

The new Juventus manager reportedly sought to sign him for Bologna a year ago. Wimmer’s attributes align well with Motta’s demands for his wide attackers, and while his goalscoring could improve, his assist numbers are noteworthy.

Additionally, his price tag is significantly lower than those of other targets Juventus has considered, such as Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood. His salary demands also fall within the club’s budgetary constraints.
