Italian football’s Calciopoli scandal of 2006 may have implicated more clubs than previously believed, according to the lead prosecutor in charge of the case.
In a report broadcast by Rai3, prosecutor Lepore revealed that “some clubs were more involved than Juventus, but the leak of news and interceptions guided and blocked. Many meetings of politicians and entrepreneurs who intended to bring down one system in favor of another.”
The report also exposed suspected irregularities in the acquisition of wiretaps by investigators, with unauthorized requests being used to obtain the SIM cards of former Juventus general manager Luciano Moggi.
It further alleged that false minutes were employed to support the investigation, and that phone numbers were obtained from an informant without proper documentation.

The report suggested that some officials may have been driven by a desire to shift power from one club to another.
Massimo Cellino, the former president of the Italian football league, was also interviewed and claimed that the league was “collapsing” at the time and that he had attempted to clean it up by burning files containing.
“Football was collapsing, I was trying to clean up a bit, but I didn’t know where to start. There were dossiers with false registrations-sureties, IRPEF… We took everything and burned it before the Finance Department arrived. They came and found nothing,” he said.
The Calciopoli scandal involved several Italian football clubs, including Juventus, AC Milan, Lazio, and Fiorentina. Juventus was stripped of its 2005 and 2006 Serie A titles and relegated to Serie B, while AC Milan, Lazio, and Fiorentina also received various sanctions.
Moggi and other officials were also banned from football for several years. The scandal shook the Italian football world and led to changes in the way the league is governed.
