Thiago Motta is reportedly planning to use a centre-back duo of Riccardo Calafiori and Gleison Bremer at Juventus next season.
Thiago Motta’s attacking style at Bologna has been extensively praised. However, a closer look at his side’s performances tells a different story.
Bologna’s true strength seems to be lying in their solid backline. With only 30 goals conceded in 37 games, Bologna boasted the second-best defensive record in the league, trailing only the champions Inter Milan.
A crucial component in Bologna’s defensive consistency was Riccardo Calafiori, a young centre-back transformed by Motta from a future prospect into a reliable defender.

Calafiori emerged as one of the most impressive defenders in Serie A, showcasing fantastic man-marking and playmaking skills.
His versatility and attacking ability make him a complete defender. No wonder Motta wants him at Juventus to partner Gleison Bremer, who is an upgrade on his current teammate Jhon Lucumi.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the plan is crystal clear: Calafiori, born in 2002, dreams of playing for Juventus under the coach who helped him develop.
However, Bologna presents an obstacle. Despite Motta’s expiring contract, the club haven’t made a decision on either him or Joshua Zirkzee, another Juve target.
Calafiori’s contract runs until 2027, and President Joey Saputo wants to keep the young star, especially after his stellar performances against Juventus, where he scored his first two Serie A goals.
Both Motta and Cristiano Giuntoli, Juventus’ Sporting Director, seem interested in a potential Bremer-Calafiori pairing.
A combined €25 million is reportedly set aside to bring the two players to Juventus, demonstrating the Bianconeri’s commitment to rebuilding their squad with young talent.
