Phil Foden follows in Alessandro Del Piero footsteps
It was November 5, 2008, when Alessandro Del Piero stunned the Santiago Bernabéu with two sensational goals from outside the box, earning a standing ovation from Real Madrid fans in a legendary Champions League night.
Seventeen years later, on November 5, 2025, another player repeated that feat: Manchester City’s Phil Foden.
The Englishman scored a brace in the Champions League — both from outside the area — unknowingly echoing one of Del Piero’s most iconic performances.
After the match, Sky Sports informed Foden about the coincidence. The young midfielder smiled with surprise as he watched the old footage.
“Oh, wow… it’s Del Piero. What an honor! I love that there are stats like this that connect you with such football legends,” he said, visibly touched.
A spontaneous, emotional reaction — and a moment now going viral — showing how even today’s stars are inspired by the timeless magic of Del Piero.
