Recently, Weston McKennie declined a move to Aston Villa due to financial reasons. He was initially set to be part of a swap deal with Samuel Illing Jr for Douglas Luiz.
Instead, the deal was finalized by involving Enzo Barrenechea. Now, Thiago Motta has stated that McKennie is not in Juventus’ future plans. As a result, McKennie has attracted interest from two new clubs.
Napoli
According to Calcio merecato, Napoli has now shown interest in the American midfielder Weston McKennie. This interest stems from Antonio Conte’s admiration for the player.
Conte, a longtime fan, had previously attempted to sign McKennie for Inter from Schalke 04 before Juventus secured him. Now, Conte has another opportunity to fulfill his wish.
Napoli could be a suitable destination for McKennie since it is in Italy, which would facilitate his lifestyle integration.
Additionally, Napoli has the financial capability to afford both his transfer fee and wages, especially as they may undergo a significant rebuild with several players potentially leaving.
Notably, Victor Osimhen is expected to depart for around 100 million euros this transfer window.
Another Napoli player considering an exit is fullback Giovanni Di Lorenzo. The Italian international has been linked to Juventus.
Since both players are of similar value, a swap deal could be a possibility, although no such rumors have emerged yet.
FC Cincinnati
According to MLS Multiplex, MLS side FC Cincinnati has made a surprising 15 million euro bid for Weston McKennie, aiming to bring him back home. This unexpected move has caught many off guard, as Cincinnati’s interest was previously unknown.
A return to the MLS would suit McKennie in terms of lifestyle, as he would be going back to familiar surroundings in the United States.
However, such a move is typically seen as a step down from European football, often pursued by older players. Additionally, McKennie would likely earn lower wages in America compared to what he might receive in Europe.
