Juventus has finalized the signing of Brazilian midfielder Douglas Luiz from Aston Villa, marking their first major summer transfer under new manager Thiago Motta.
The Bianconeri will pay €22 million upfront and send Samuel Iling-Junior and Enzo Barrenechea to Aston Villa. The deal also includes potential add-ons of €2-3 million, and Juventus secured a percentage of the future sell-on fee for both Barrenechea and Iling-Junior.
Douglas Luiz is valued at €50 million, and a Juventus doctor will travel to his Brazil training camp to conduct a medical examination before finalizing the contract.
Douglas Luiz’s signing is seen as a crucial step in bolstering Juventus’ midfield under Motta’s tactics. His girlfriend, Alisha Lehmann, a well-known Swiss footballer, is also considering joining Juventus Women.
The transfer was orchestrated by Juventus sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli and Aston Villa counterpart Johan Lange.
Aston Villa needed to sell a player before June 30 to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations. Douglas Luiz’s contract was set to expire in 2026, and he had rejected a renewal offer.
Aston Villa opted to sell him as they prioritized signing Youri Tielemans and manager Unai Emery agreed with this decision.
Juventus seized the opportunity to secure a midfielder aligned with Motta’s philosophy. They sacrificed Iling, whose contract was due to expire in 2025, and Barrenechea, who was initially intended to be part of the pre-season squad.
Negotiations for Weston McKennie’s inclusion in the deal stalled due to his high salary demands and severance payment requests. McKennie remains on the transfer market but is likely headed elsewhere.
