The mega-deal that will bring Douglas Luiz to Juventus appears to be on the verge of completion.
This is despite the roadblock created by Weston McKennie in recent days, which seriously threatened to derail the entire operation.
McKennie’s refusal to accept Aston Villa’s offer forced Juventus to find an alternative plan to meet the English club’s demands, resulting in the inclusion of Enzo Barrenechea (along with Samuel Iling-Junior) as a replacement.
McKennie’s Aston Villa Rejection: Financial Reasons at Play
So why did the American midfielder decline the move to Aston Villa? The issue, which involves both Juventus and the Villans, appears to be largely financial in nature.
At Aston Villa, McKennie reportedly demanded a salary of around €5 million net, essentially the same figure he was seeking from Juventus in contract renewal talks.
Furthermore, McKennie also requested a substantial severance payment from the Bianconeri, which further complicated matters.
As a result of his Villa rejection, McKennie remains on the market.
And according to the reports, there is potential interest from Napoli, a team led by Antonio Conte and Giovanni Manna, who both know McKennie well and could therefore have an advantage in persuading him to join.
Key Points
- Douglas Luiz transfer to Juventus is close despite McKennie’s initial resistance.
- McKennie’s financial demands and severance payment request caused the Villa deal to collapse.
- McKennie’s future uncertain, with Napoli potentially interested.
