UEFA.com spoke to Andrea Cambiaso after Italy’s opening Euro 2024 victory against Albania. The young defender reflected on his journey to the national team, the upcoming match against Spain, and his hopes for the tournament.
On his European Championship experience
“Three years ago, if someone had told me I would be here, I would never have believed it. It’s been a great climb. Every year, every day. I’ve worked hard to be here and now I’m very proud. I am who I am because of hard work. I don’t regret anything about my footballing life, I would do it all again from day one because it’s what brought me here. I’m an example that with hard work, you can achieve great things.”
On his call-up to the national team
“I hoped for it, but there was never a day when I really believed I would make it. I pretended nothing. I worked every day thinking about Juventus. I had gone on a training camp before the one in America but I hadn’t played. Let’s say I cultivated this hope in silence at Juventus. I was already very happy to be in the 30, then when I got into the 26 it was a great emotion. I’m very happy, especially for my family.”
On the Euro 2020 winners in the squad
“I’m always close to Chiesa at lunch and I often ask him about the emotions he felt in that tournament, we often talk about it and now we hope to repeat. That night at Wembley I was at home with some friends, the next day I had to leave for the training camp with Genoa. I remember it very well, I remember Gigio’s save on Saka, a beautiful memory. The nice thing is that I was watching it with friends who will be in the stands against Spain. It’s a full circle, it’s a beautiful thing for guys who always support me.”
On the match against Albania
“The only regret against Albania is that we should have closed it out earlier with the chances we created. It was an incredible reaction, it wasn’t easy even considering the atmosphere in the stadium and the goal conceded after just a few seconds. It was complicated and we showed that we are a great team. In the first half we were very orderly, compact both in attacking and defending. We didn’t give away a counterattack, we were very well positioned on the pitch.”
On his versatility
“I try to adapt to all roles. The manager told me to hold my position, to keep possession at a delicate moment in the game. I tried to do what he asked me to do.”
On the match against Spain
“It will be a beautiful game because they are two great teams, two historic national teams. Spain is one of the big favorites and we have to defend the title. They have very strong players. Yamal is a young boy and he is already at a very high level. But also in midfield Rodri, Pedri, in short they are a really great team in every department. We will have to fight, play as a team and I am convinced that we can do it.”
On Spain’s strengths
“There are many but maybe I remember the one from EURO 2012, the 1-1 draw in the opening game. At Coverciano Gigi [Buffon] told us that that was a very important game for them because they became aware of what they had to do thanks to that performance. Then it went badly in the final but it stayed with me that they played a really great game. We hope to do the same.”
Cambiaso’s enthusiasm and determination are evident in his words. He is relishing the opportunity to represent his country at the European Championship and is confident that Italy can defend its title. The match against Spain will be a tough test, but Cambiaso and his teammates are ready to fight for every point.
