Italian forward Federico Chiesa spoke with UEFA about the national team’s upcoming Euros campaign, revealing his hunger to recapture the magic of 2020 and return Italy to World Cup glory.
Chiesa, a key player in Italy’s last Euros triumph, is eager to prove himself once again.
“We want to demonstrate our worth,” he declared, “just like we did at the last Euros. After that, we need to focus on qualifying for the World Cup again, having missed out on the last two tournaments.”
Italy faces a challenging Euros group, but Chiesa remains focused on the opening match.
“Our group is undeniably tough,” he acknowledged, “but for now, we’re concentrating on Albania. They know us well and understand the Italian style of play. It will be a difficult challenge, and we need complete focus.”
The winger also discussed the difference in his role between club and country.
“At Juventus, I played a more contained role,” he explained, “whereas Coach Spalletti allows me more freedom on the pitch. After the 2020 Euros, my goal was to become one of the world’s best, but unfortunately, a cruciate ligament injury forced me into a lengthy rehabilitation process.
“However, my ambition to return to the top remains unchanged. I’m only 26, and I have time to prove myself.”
Chiesa expressed his admiration for young tennis star Jannik Sinner.
“The comparison to Sinner flatters me,” he admitted. “Tennis is a sport I greatly admire, and Sinner seems like a good guy from what I’ve seen. He’s focused and determined to be number one, and he’s achieved that goal. We have to congratulate him.”
Finally, Chiesa shared his respect for former teammate Álvaro Morata.
“We don’t keep in touch anymore,” he said, “but we had a good understanding on the pitch when we played together at Juventus. He’s a great person and a top player.”
With Chiesa’s determination and talent, Italy will be hoping to make a deep run at the Euros and secure their place at the next World Cup.
