Juventus are embarking on a new era with the appointment of Thiago Motta as their manager. After a phenomenal season leading Bologna to Champions League qualification, Motta arrives at a club desperate for improvement.
Despite winning the Coppa Italia, Juventus’s overall performance in 2023/24 was underwhelming. Here’s a breakdown of Motta’s top priorities, according to 90Min Football:
1. Midfield Revamp
Juventus fans have long craved a midfield rebuild since the iconic days of Pirlo, Marchisio, Vidal, and Pogba.
Links to Douglas Luiz, coupled with potential exits for Samuel Iling-Junior and McKennie, suggest significant changes are on the horizon.
Fagioli’s return adds further depth. Landing a player like Luiz could significantly address the midfield issues that have plagued Juventus.
Adrien Rabiot’s future remains uncertain but Juventus are already linked with other midfielders like Tuen Koopmeiners from Atalanta and Youssouf Fofana from AS Monaco.
2. Unleashing Vlahovic’s Potential
Dusan Vlahovic’s €80 million price tag hasn’t translated into the expected impact. Playing in a defensive-minded system hasn’t helped.
Creating more chances for Juve’s star striker must be a tactical priority for Motta’s staff. Juventus can’t afford for such a high-profile signing to underperform.
3. Fostering Young Talent
Juve boasts a wealth of young talent with immense potential: Kenan Yildiz, Fabio Miretti, Matias Soule (reportedly to leave), Andrea Cambiaso, Nicolo Fagioli, and Nicolussi Caviglia.
Given Juventus’s financial constraints, Motta needs to prioritize developing these youngsters, particularly the highly promising Yildiz.
4. Entertaining the Fans
Watching Juventus towards the end of last season was a recipe for drowsiness. Motta’s possession-based style offers a welcome change.
Making Juventus exciting to watch again should be a relatively low bar to clear, and one Motta’s philosophy seems well-suited to achieve.
Juventus average ball possession over the years:
▫️48.4% → 2023/24 (Allegri)
▫️49.6% → 2022/23 (Allegri)
▫️51.6% → 2021/22 (Allegri)
▫️57.1% → 2020/21 (Pirlo)Thiago Motta’s Bologna this season → 58.4%. pic.twitter.com/ADkHRI9f71
