Next Gen was set up in August 2018, and since then, there have been serious doubts over its productivity. Many of the Next Gen players have yet to feature in the first team, and those who have broke into the senior side have mostly remained on the bench.
Who has been good enough?
Currently, there are only two players in the Next Gen who have played for Juventus. Joseph Nonge played in the dying stages vs. Napoli. He didn’t play well, unfortunately, giving away a penalty and getting subbed off. His substitution seemed like a poor decision from Max Allegri. He has also played three other games for the club, two of which were in the Coppa Italia. Nikola Sekulov has featured one time for Juventus, in a 2-1 loss vs. Lazio in the Coppa Italia. He only played for 10 minutes.
This is a disheartening trend where players from the academy, despite their potential, haven’t played enough. Even those who have, like Koni Di Winter, end up being sold. This is a significant loss for the club, considering the money and years of time invested in their development. It’s a frustrating situation for Juve’s academy, especially since they have loaned out the likes of Mattias Soule, who can potentially secure a regular place in the senior team.
Radu Dragsin and Koni De Winter have both proved to be of Seria A quality, but both players were sold. On the other hand, Kaio Jorge, Mattias Soule, Dean Huijsen and Enzo Barrenechea have all looked for loan deals to secure more playing time.
Those who have stayed
Kenan Yildiz, Samuel Illing Jr, Fabio Mirreti, Nicolo Fagioli and Hans Nicolussi Caviglia have all stayed to play for the senior team this season. Kenan Yildiz has been the only one who plays regularly. There’s also Nicolussi Caviglia, who almost never gets played. Fabio Miretti is always called inexperienced after he plays, but he barely gets any chances. Samuel Illing Jr has been playing behind Kostic. Allegri seems to believe that Kostic is better defensively when Illing has proved to be good enough on the defensive side and even better going forward.
Overall, it seems the main problem with Next Gen is that the players don’t get enough chances to play for the first team. Those who break into the seniore side are often sold or loaned out. This show that the club don’t have a clear startegy for youth developement.
